3rd Grade Paul Klee Postcards

3rd graders already studied Paul Klee for their portraiture unit but using what did learn, they took the drawing portion and using oil pastels, created postcards to send to our friends in Michigan.

Students drew a simple line drawing of a person (didn’t matter if it was a self-portrait or not) and then divided the space using pencil with straight lines across the page.  From there, each pencil section was to be colored with a different colored oil pastel.  The key, and challenge, was to show different shades of color within each detail of that section.  This was a chance to discuss tints and tones but also see what their understanding was so I could better meet their needs in 4th grade.

Check them out!

Needlesstosay, they turned out well! And my 3rd graders’ understanding of tints and tones was pretty spot on!
